Why do you need to sort and prepare your recyclables? Properly pre-sorted loads are more marketable. White paper is worth more than colored because it can be recycled without bleaching. Foreign objects can damage recycling equipment and recycled products. Even a few wrong items can contaminate an entire load. So recycle right . . . and trash less!

| Newspaper |
Any inserts that come in a newspaper can be recycled with it, too. Put newspapers in paper bags or just stack. Include other all-newsprint items such as coupon books.
NO: plastic bags or string, please. | |
Corrugated Cardboard |
Only 3-layered cardboard (PLEASE FLATTEN) and paper grocery bags accepted.
OK: Tape, staples, stickers.
NO: Waxed, food-contaminated, or single-layer paperboard (e.g. cereal/shoe/tissue boxes, notepad backs. | |
White Paper |
Separate from mixed paper. Include WHITE copy, letterhead, computer, and notebook paper.
OK: Staples and inks.
NO: Paint, crayon, envelopes, paper clips, tape, glue, plastic, rubber bands, or paperboard. | |
Mixed Paper |
Separate from white paper. Include colored paper, unwanted mail, sticky notes, envelopes, folders, index cards, and shredded paper.
OK: Staples and inks.
NO: Paper clips, tape, glue, plastic, rubber bands, paperboard, newspapers, magazines, or pet food bags. | |
Magazines & Catalogs |
Separate from other paper categories. Include all glossy paper items, such as posters, calendars, and brochures. Put in paper bags or loose.
NO: Plastic bags or wrappers, or string. Recycle phone books separately. | |
Tin Cans & Aluminum |
Recycle together.
TIN CANS: rinse well, remove labels, include tin lids. ALUMINUM: Included rinsed non-returnable cans, cleaned aluminum foil, pie pans, and frozen dinner trays.
NO: Scrap metal, appliances, or cans with plastic or paper attached (e.g. frozen juice). | |
Glass Bottles & Jars |
Remove lids and rinse well. Separate into these three groups:
- CLEAR & BLUE
- BROWN & AMBER
- GREEN
OK: Labels.
NO: Window glass, light bulbs, mirrors, dishes, drinking glasses, ceramics, metal.
Glass is only accepted at the 1950 NW Mulholland location.

Plastic Bottles & Tubs |
Plastic bottles and tub-type containers. Remove twist caps. Rinse well and flatten.
OK: Labels, tub lids, buckets smaller than five gallons, and plant pots. (If it doesn’t have a numbered triangle on the bottom, it isn’t recyclable!)
NO: Motor oil containers, Styrofoam, or toys. Recycle plastic bags and milk/water jugs separately. | |
Plastic Jugs |
Non-colored #2 plastic milk and water jugs only. Remove lids, rinse well, and flatten. | |
Plastic Bags |
Make sure the bags are empty, clean, and dry. | |
Phone Books |
Keep separate from magazines and catalogs. | |
Books |
Hardback & softback. Keep separate from phone books. | |
Reusable Clothing & Household Items |
Clean, useable items can be taken to one of our donation centers. |
